Electric Boogaloos (USA)

The Electric Boogaloos are the group responsible for the creation of the styles known
worldwide as 'popping' and 'boogaloo'. After seeing the legendary group The Lockers
perform on television in 1975, Boogaloo Sam, the group's founder, was inspired to
create his own dance style with a whole new set of movements.
The name of the group
was inspired by James Brown's song 'Do the Boogaloo' . The name emphasises the funk roots of popping, locking and
boogaloo - moves that developed on the West Coast during the funk era - and their
difference from the B-boying style of the East Coast-born Hip Hop era.
Boogaloo is a fluid style that uses the whole body. It incorporates angles and rolling
movements of the hips, knees and head. Popping, also created by Sam, involves snapping the legs back and flexing muscles
continuously to the beat to give a jerky, snappy effect.
Other group members include
Sam's little brother Popin Pete, who first inspired Jonzi D to embark upon his own
dance career at a Covent Garden street
performance twenty years ago.
